Jurassic Park (1993)

DIRECTED BY: Steven Spielberg
STARRING: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough
RATED: PG-13
OPINION STARS: 4 out of 5
THIS FILM IS: Suspensful, Scary, Fast-paced
-------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION: An ambitous multimillionaire (Attenborough) unveils a new theme park where people can observe dinosaurs that have been cloned using advanced DNA technology. But when a devious employee tampers with the security system, the dinosaurs are unleashed, and the visitors find themselves fighting to survive. NOTE: Based on the novel by Michael Crichton. Despite following its source material rather loosely, Spielberg's mega hit monster movie still succeeds on several levels. The dinosaurs - thanks to expert CGI-craftsmanship - are spectacular and terrifyingly realistic. The story itself is a bit lacking, but if you take Jurassic Park for the non-stop thrill ride that it is, you won't be disappointed. As in Frankenstein, there is an underlying theme about the dangers of trying to play God.

Batman Begins (2006)

Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes
RATED:         PG-13
OPINION STARS: 4 out of 5
THIS FILM IS:  Dark, Thoughtful, Intense
-------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION: Following the brutal murder of his parents, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Bale) travels the world searching for means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. After intense physical and psychological training under a mysterious instructor (Neeson), Wayne returns to his native Gotham City and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a hero who uses his strength, intellect, and an array of high tech weaponry to fight the criminals of Gotham's underworld.

NOTE: The first film in Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise, this gritty re-imagining of Gotham's hero rises above typical superhero fare, and makes for some surprisingly thoughtful entertainment. The story - though not flawless - has a very serious feel to it, and avoids the cheesiness that many movies of the same genre fall into. Christian Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, while Caine provides humor as the butler Alfred. Neeson plays the enigmatic Ducard very well; and Cillian Murphy makes for a genuinely creepy Dr. Jonathan Crane.

RATED:        PG-13
OPINION STARS: 3 out of 5

-------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION: As a security expert who specializes in designing theft-proof financial computer systems, Jack Stanfield (Ford) has cemented his reputation as a man who has thought of everything. Things begin to spiral out of control, however, when a ruthless criminal (Bettany) takes his family hostage, and forces Jack to take part in a large-scale bank theft. With the lives of his wife and children on the line, Jack must race against time to find a loophole in the thief's own impenetrable system of subterfuge... and beat him at his own game.

NOTE: Firewall isn't an outstanding contribution to the thriller genre, but it's not a bad one either. Most of the story, if not thoroughly original, is taut, and there are some interesting action sequences, including one where (believe it or not) Stanfield kills an opponent with a blender. Harrison Ford is good as the bank security expert, whose most likeable quality (in my opinion) is his readiness to beat the stuffing out of anybody who threatens his family. Kudos to Bettany for his role as the eerie, soft-spoken criminal mastermind.

DESCRIPTION: Ann Darrow is a vaudeville actress who finds herself down on luck in Depression-era New York - that is, until manic film director Carl Denham (Black) tempts her with a lead role. Venture, which Denham claims is headed for Singapore. It soon becomes cear, however, that Denham is really searching for the legendary Skull Island, hoping to revive his failing career by capturing it's exotic wonders on film. Nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Director 2006.

NOTE: King Kong is Jackson's big, bold remake of the revered 1933 original. Getting off to a slow - though not uninteresting - start, this movie really begins to shine once the Venture arrives at Skull Island, where Jackson and his team once again prove their spectacular prowess in the world of visual effects. The choreography and execution of the action scenes are nothing short of stunning (particularly in the one involving Kong and three T-Rex, as well as another that can only be described as a bug-phobic's worst nightmare). Kong suceeds on the emotional level as well, playing out the platonic love-story with surprising poignancy and depth.

NOTE: If you can get past the tasetless indecency that pervades the first twenty minutes or so, Iron Man is a blast. The storyline is surprisingly thoughtful and clever, and sets the stage for some jaw-dropping action sequences (the scene where Stark breaks out of the terrorist camp is brilliantly paced). Robert Downey Jr. is superb as the selfish-turned-selfless Tony Stark, and the climactic one-liner at the conclusion of the film will knock you off your seat.

DESCRIPTION: Set in 13th century Scotland, Braveheart follows the bold exploits of Scottish warrior William Wallace. When the woman he loves is slaughtered at the hands of English soldiers, Wallace - initially content to remain non-combative - wreaks vengence on her murderers and takes a stand against English tyranny in Scotland. Utilizing the steel of his sword and the fire of his intellect, he gathers an amateur but fiercely patriotic army and begins a long,
bitter struggle to free his country from England's rule. Winner of 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture 1995.

NOTE: Having heard so many good things about it, and being an ardent Scottish history buff, I was really disappointed with Braveheart.  The history in this movie is incredibly bad. And I mean, incredibly.  I can tolerate a few historical inaccuracies in a film, but blatant rewriting of history is something I find very hard to stomach. And in Braveheart, such rewriting abounds. I won't go into details here: if you don't believe me, go read up on it and see for yourself. The real, honest-to-goodness story of William Wallace is far more interesting than anything made up in Hollywood.

NOTE: I am an ardent fan of Sherlock Holmes. I love the original stories by Doyle, having read quite a few of them. And I must say that this film contains the most accurate rendering of Doyle's famous detective I have ever seen on screen. Ever. That's not an exaggeration, either. The Holmes in Doyle's stories was not just a man of peerless intellect - he was also a boxer, could shoot and fence well, and knew an early form of martial arts. He also had serious bouts with depression, was often unpredictable and blunt, and kept an untidy apartment. It may sound odd, but the Holmes was the epitomy of oddness, and this film shows him as such. Another plus is that Watson is shown, not as a bumbling fool, but as the muscular, intelligent Army doctor he was. The one flaw is Irene Adler - her character is a much different than the one Doyle created. (And while Holmes did admire her, they never had a relationship). This aside, however, the movie is blast, and definitely worth watching. Just ignore the guff from the "critics" and the people-who-think-they're-true-Doyle-fans-but-really-aren't.

NOTE: A personal favorite. As one critic noted, "... [The Matrix] is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy." Fusing a one-of-a-kind premise with mind-blowing special effects (most notably "bullet-time"), this is a classic film that sci-fi fans will not want to miss. And there's plenty to think about long after the credits have finished rolling. Biblical themes - such as Original Sin - are easily found beneath the enthralling storyline. Highly reccommended.

NOTE: A decent flick, and worth a watch as long as you don't mind subtitles. For those interested, it certainly provides an interesting look at ancient Mongolian culture. The real plus of this film, though, is the cinematogrophy, which is vivid, breathtaking, and just plain amazing. That battle scenes are okay, but in my opinion, still not as inpressivec as they might have been. The historical accuracy is also a bit dodgy, and the story feels disjointed in places, leaving the viewer somewhat confused and dissatisfied.

NOTE: A personal favorite. This is a real eye-opener to the brutality of the gladiatorial arena. To read about it in books is one thing; to actually see it is quite another. It's genuinely stomach-turning to hear the crowds roar in satisfaction as they watch men hack each other to pieces. As for Crowe... well, it's not hard to see why he earned an Academy Award for his role. He plays his character to absolute perfection: Maximus is a man of honor and unflinching resolve among a perverse and fickle multitude.

NOTE: Much as I enjoyed Batman Begins (2006), I liked this sequel even more. Strikingly realistic and grim, The Dark Knight is so much more than just a superhero film: it is an explosive morality play on an epic scale. In terms of thoughtfulness and sheer emotional impact, I've seldom seen it matched. As for Ledger's Joker... well, suffice it to say that after seeing him, all other movie villains will look tame in comparison. He slaughters, maims, and destroys with a sadistic glee that will make your stomach turn. And he does it all - not because it's convenient or profitable - but on principle. He does it just for the laughs. In my opinion, he's the most frightening picture of man's depravity ever put on screen.
